She’d been driving around a lot in the Arizona summer, using up lots of gas to run the air conditioner. She was only 150 miles away from home, and had already dropped off the VIP she had been chauffeuring at the airport. Except for getting home, her job was done. But even with A/C on it felt hot in the car.
She felt around the seats and dash – wow, that dash was like fire! Surely it couldn’t just be from the sun. She pulled over and opened the hood to check the radiator, but it didn’t seem to be in need of water.
Then appeared those wonderful Arizona men who cannot abide a damsel in distress. They discovered there was almost no oil in the engine, and that the engine had been overheating due to lack of lubricating oil Even though she’d been away from home for two weeks she never thought about checking the oil – her husband always did that kind of stuff.
Lack of oil can wreck the engine entirely, and cause thousands of dollars worth of damage – usually you have to replace the entire engine. So she was very lucky in that respect. But just checking the oil every second or third time you fill up the gas tank can save you a disaster.
A different woman who was driving a long distance in a van did routinely check the oil, and although there were no other indicators, one time she checked the dipstick was dry – as if all the oil had leaked out. She put some oil in the van, but still the dipstick was dry. She put in some more oil, but this time the dipstick appeared and was marked overfilled. A few minutes later it came up dry again. Yet no oil had leaked out under the van.
When she took it to an auto repair shop, the mechanics found out that there was a hole in the metal tube that the dipstick goes into. Sometimes when you put the dipstick back in the tube it went into the hole an came out dry. And sometimes it went into the crankcase where there was way too much oil, and came out reading overfilled.
Too much oil could also cause damage to the engine because it creates pressure. So it is fortunate that she found a place to pull into to get it handled.
Everyone has some unusual car stories. They are interesting or even funny when you look back on them, but they aren’t funny when they happen. Both of these could have been prevented. Part of standard maintenance includes regular oil changes, and a good idea is to have that standard maintenance done at your regular auto repair shop, where you trust the mechanics to do a good job for the right price. If you don’t have a regular garage, you should find one.

These days everything is specialized. Most doctors are specialists. Even dentists. Even car repair and maintenance. We’ve come to expect it. One franchise does oil changes, one franchise fixes brakes, one fixes mufflers. You can go to one place to get new tires, but they won’t do alignments – you have to go somewhere else for that.
Whatever happened to mechanics who knew everything about cars and could fix it all? Consider this scenario.
You go to a quick lube franchise for an oil change. You also noticed something strange with the brakes and ask them if they can check that out, too. But they can’t because they only do oil changes. So you go to another franchise that fixes brakes.
An honest mechanic at the brake place tightens something on the brakes and says that is all you need on the brakes, but he noticed there was some transmission fluid leaking. So you ask if he can fix it. But he cannot fix it because he only does brakes. He can’t even tell you if it is serious or not.
The transmission repairmen see you coming. They aren’t as honest as the guy who fixed the brakes, and they can only see your wallet. They figure they can get a fat paycheck fixing that little leak that wasn’t even demanding attention, so they take hours to drain the transmission fluid and fix some gasket that would have lasted another two years. They know you aren’t coming back to their shop, so no need to be fair to the customer.
If you are lucky, you have only spent one day, driving from place to place, waiting for estimates and repairs and getting some work done that you may or may not have needed. And it cost you a pretty penny, a lot more than if you had taken it to just one auto repair shop to get all the work done. You may be wasting your time, but you are paying for their time. The mechanics at these places don’t know you and they don’t know your car, so it has taken even longer for them to figure it out.
There are some auto repair shops that have certified mechanics who can repair anything. They know how mechanical things work, and they are good. Such a shop is usually family owned and well established. They want your business so they do honest work at a fair price.
